நுண்மாண் நுழைபுலம் இல்லான் எழில்நலம்
மண்பாண் புனைபாவை அற்று. (407)

விளக்கம்:
நுட்பமாகவும் சிறப்பாகவும் நுழைந்து கற்ற அறிவுநலம் இல்லாதவனின் உடல் அழகு, மண்ணால் அழகாகச் செய்த ஒரு பாவையின் உடல் அழகு போன்றதே.

Explanation:
One who doesn’t acquire the fine and good knowledge, even if he is fair;
is like a good hansom toy made of earthen material.

குறுந்தொகை இன்று..

சிறுவெள் ளரவின் அவ்வரிக் குருளை
     கான யானை அணங்கி யாஅங்கு
இளையள் முளைவாள் எயிற்றள்
     வளையுடைக் கையள்எம் அணங்கி யோளே.

விளக்கம்:
காட்டில் இருக்கும் கோடுடைய சிறு பாம்பை பார்த்து, சலனப்படும் யானை போல;
அரிசி பல், வளையல் கை கொண்டு வந்த இளையவளை பார்த்து மனம் மயங்குகிறது.

Explanation:
As a little white snake with lovely strips on its young body bring dilemma to the jungle elephant, this girl with her teeth like sprouts of new rice and with her wrists stacked with bangles troubles me.

வினைக்கண் வினையுடையான் கேன்மை வேறாக
நினைப்பான் நீங்கும் திரு. (519)

விளக்கம்:
எப்போதும் தன் தொழிலிலே முயற்சி உடையவனது நட்பினைப் பாராட்டாமல், வேறாக நினைப்பவனைவிட்டுச் செல்வம் தானும் நீங்கிவிடும்.

Explanation:
One who ever don’t appreciate the friendship of the hardworking friend;
will have his wealth leave him.

P.S. Whoever don’t respect hard work will have same attitude to his business also.

நயன்சாரா நன்மையின் நீக்கும் பயன்சாராப்
பண்பில்சொல் பல்லார் அகத்து. (194)

விளக்கம்:
பயனோடு சேராத பண்பற்ற சொற்களைப் பலரோடும் சொல்லுதல், எந்த நன்மையையும் தராததோடு உள்ள நன்மையையும் போக்கிவிடும்.

Explanation:
Articulating useless and uncivilized words, which apart from doing no good ;
will also spoil whatever good left behind.

மணந்தநாள் வீங்கிய தோள். (1233)

விளக்கம்:
காதலரோடு கூடியிருந்த நாள்களிலே பூரித்திருந்த தோள்கள் மெலிவடைந்து, அவருடைய பிரிவைப் பிறருக்கு நன்றாகத் தெரிவிப்பவை போல் உள்ளனவே.

Explanation:
My shoulder, which are good till my lover is with me;
is becoming lean and reveal my “Malady of Separation” to the world.

சங்க இலக்கியம் இன்று..

படைப்புப் பல படைத்துப் பலரோடு உண்ணும்
   உடைப்பெருஞ் செல்வராயினும் இடைப்படக்
குறுகுறு நடந்து சிறுகை நீட்டி
   இட்டும் தொட்டும் கவ்வியும் துழந்தும்
நெய்யுடை அடிசில் மெய்பட விதுர்த்தும்
   மயக்குறு மக்களை இல்லோர்க்குப்
பயக்குறை இல்லை தாம்வாழும் நாளே!

விளக்கம்:
"எலாச் செல்வங்களையும் பெற்று செல்வனாக இருந்து பயனில்லை! பலரோடு விருந்துண்டு உறவாடுதலில் பயனில்லை! வீட்டில் இங்கும் அங்குமாக நடைபயிலும் குழந்தை கையை நீட்டும்; கலத்துணவை தரையில் தள்ளும். பிசைந்து வாயிலிட்டு,நெய்யுணவை உடலில் படுமாறு சிதறிவிடும். இவ்வாறு சிறுகுறும்பு செய்யும் மக்களை இல்லாதவர்க்கு வாழ்நாள் பயனற்றது,வீடு பேறும் இல்லையாம்". பாண்டியன் அறிவுடை நம்பியிடம் சென்ற பிசிராந்தையார் அரசன் சிறப்படைய இப்பாடல் வரிகளினைப் பாடினார்.

Explanation:
It is not enough; even he has all the Wealth and is a great Business magnet. His life is useless if there is no infant in his home, who will roam around spreading his little hands; to catch, to bite, and to spoil the order; and will throw the food on the floor; thus giving us coziness by performing small mischief;

P.S. This is poem is sung by Pisir-anthai-yaar at the court of Pandian King Ari-vudai Nambi. In the Sangam age (2400 years ago)

திருக்குறள் இன்று..

அனிச்சப்பூக் கால்களெயால் பெய்தாள் நுசுப்பிற்கு
நல்ல படாஅ பறை. (1115)

விளக்கம்:
தன் இடையின் நுண்மையை நினையாதவளாய், அனிச்ச மலரைக் காம்பு களையாமல் கூந்தலிலே சூடியுள்ளாளே;
இவளின் முறிந்துவிடும் இடைக்கு இனி பறைகள் சோகமாய் ஒலிக்கும்.

Explanation:
She wears without any thought, the Anicham flower without removing the stalk;
now the drums will blare with sadness for her broken waist (because of the extra weight).

P.S. Anicham flower itself is very light, and the girl’s hip is so delicate that it will not able to carry the extra weight of the stem coming along with the flower. The hips will break, Wow!! What an imagination!!
