ஒரு ஆண், ஒரு பெண் மீது உள்ள காதலை பலமுறை வெளிப்படுத்தியும், அந்தப் பெண் அவனை ஏறிட்டும் நோக்காததால், அந்த ஆண் காதலை வெளிப்படையாகச் சொல்லுமாறு உடலெங்கும் சாம்பலைப் பூசிக்கொண்டு, கிழிந்த ஆடையை உடுத்தி, பனைக்கருக்கு ஒன்றை குதிரை வடிவத்தில் செய்து, அதன் மீது ஏறிக்கொண்டு தன் நண்பர்கள் மூலம் அதைத் தெருவில் இழுத்து வரச் செய்து, ஓலையின் கீறல்களால் உடலெங்கும் காயமாகி, தெருவில் செல்கையில் அந்தப் பெண்ணை, ஊரார் காதுபட சத்தமாக ஏசி, அவள் மானத்தை வாங்கி, அதைப் பொறுக்காமலாவது அப்பெண் தன்னை மணம் புரிந்து கொள்ள சம்மதிக்கலாம் என்ற கொள்கையோடு நடந்துகொள்வதுதான் மடலேறுதல் அல்லது மடலூர்தல். அப்படியும் காதலி இசையவில்லையெனில் அடுத்த நாள் மலையேறிக் குதித்து உயிர் துறப்பான்.

Madal Eruthal, is the “Palm leaf ride” explained in the old Tamil poems. A man is in love with a girl and his proposal is rejected by her. Then he decides to say his love to the society, by procession called “Palm leaf Ride”. There he will apply ashes to his body; wear torn clothes and will take a palm branch and sit down on it. And the procession starts with the friends pulling the palm branch in her lover’s street. The procession will cause injuries by the Palm leaves, still the procession proceeds, thereby indirectly announcing to the society. This is the extreme step to take, by bringing bad name to the girl, he hope the girl will accept because of his affliction. Even then girl is not accepting his love; he will commit suicide from the rock top.
